The Egungun, the spirits of Yoruba ancestors,  are believed to watch over their descendants and figure in modern rituals

The Yoruba culture has changed as a result of contact with the outside world. Islam was introduced into the culture in around 1100, and Christianity around 1850 when the Europeans began to colonize Africa. Today these two religions are professed by most of the Yoruba. The pressures of modern life and the effects of public education have further eroded the culture in the younger generation. Today there are approximately twenty-five illion Yoruba.
