The "Grand Staircase" at Knossos

There are 54 stairs in the staircase which goes down to the "Hall of the Double Axes." On their way down, the stairs open onto two colonnaded landings. Many do not accept Evans' designation of this area as the "royal apartments" because the rooms are at the bottom of four flights of steps and are very dark.
