blue monkey fresco from the House of the Frescoes, northwest of the palace of Knossos.
These blue moneys appear on a wall in Akrotiri, a Minoan city on the island of Santorini. The monkey was indigienous to Egypt and may have been brought to the island as gifts and pets. The artist creates a highly naturalistic portrait of the animal - blue with a white belly and groin - very different from the highly stylized Egyptian art of the period.
